The Decreasing Prevalence of the Arcuate Foramen
2018
[Background]: The arcuate foramen (AF), or ponticulus posticus, is an anatomic variant of the first cervical vertebra that consists of a complete or partial osseous bridge over the groove for the vertebral artery and extends from the posterior aspect of the superior articular facet to the superior lateral border of the posterior arch. The AF has been associated with clinical symptoms, such as headache, migraine, neck pain, shoulder pain, arm pain, and vertebral artery dissection. We aimed to test whether the prevalence of the AF has decreased in the modern human population over the past centuries as a result of reduction in inbreeding and endogamy.
The posterior talocalcaneal ligament: an MRI evaluation
2020
Purpose Awideinter-individualvariabilityintermsofsize,orientationandinsertionisobservedregardingankleligaments. The aim of this study is to identify and describe the anatomical features of the posterior talocalcaneal ligament (PTCL) observed through the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the ankle. Methods The study was retrospectively carried out on 893 ankle MRI’s exams. The exams have all been performed using a 1.5-T (T) MRI. The same scanning protocols and scan planes were carried out in all the exams. The first evaluated param- eter was the recognition of the PTCL. Subsequently, in all those cases where the ligament was present, its features such as insertion sites, length, and…
The Retrotransverse Foramen of the Atlas Is not a Modern Anatomic Variation
2019
Background The retrotransverse foramen (RTF) is a nonmetric variant of the atlas vertebra that consists of an abnormal accessory foramen located on the posterior root of the transverse process and it extends from the posterior root of the transverse process to the root of the posterior arch. Its presence has been related to regional variations of the venous circulation. It is currently unknown whether the RTF is a modern or an ancient anatomic variation. Case Description We analyzed the skeletal remains from the late-ancient Roman necropolis (II-VI centuries ad ) of La Boatella (Valencia, Spain) and we found a well-preserved individual skeleton that presented with a left retrotransverse for…
What is the frequency of anatomical variations and pathological findings in maxillary sinuses among patients subjected to maxillofacial cone beam com…
2016
Background When considering dental implant rehabilitation in atrophic posterior sectors, the maxillary sinuses must be evaluated in detail. Knowledge of the anatomical variations and of the potential lesions found in these structures conditions the outcome of sinus lift procedures and therefore of the dental implants. A systematic review is made to determine the frequency of anatomical variations and pathological findings in maxillary sinuses among patients subjected to cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and Methods A PubMed (MEDLINE) literature search was made of articles published up until 20 December 2015. The systematic review was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting I…
Prevalence of anatomic variations of the atlas vertebra
2018
Abstract BACKGROUND CONTEXT The retrotransverse foramen (RTF), arcuate foramen (AF), unclosed transverse foramen (UTF) and posterior atlas arch defects (PAAD) are anatomic variations of the atlas vertebra that surgeons must be aware of before spine surgery is performed. PURPOSE To analyze the prevalence of the AF, RTF, UTF, and PAAD. STUDY DESIGN Ex-vivo anatomical study. PATIENT SAMPLE Two hundred eighteen atlas vertebrae obtained from 100 Caucasian subjects and 118 sub-Saharan African subjects (48 Sotho subjects, 35 Xhosa subjects and 35 Zulu subjects). METHODS We studied 218 atlas vertebrae from skeletons of the Raymond A. Dart Collection in order to analyze the prevalence of AF, RTF, UT…
3D CT scan for perioperative identification of anatomical variations of lungs.
2016
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate anatomical lung variations and vascular patterns using volumetric 3D computed tomography (CT) representations. Methods & results: We considered 24 major thoracic surgery performed in our ward. In these, we discovered some interesting anatomical variations of the main pulmonary fissures. These findings were not visible on the plain x-ray or during routine examination of a preoperative CT scan. After re-examination of 3D CT scan reconstruction the anatomical variations were detected. Discussion: General thoracic surgeons must familiarize themselves with anatomical variations in lungs. 3D images may aid the general thoracic surgeon in performin…
Possible Clinical Implications of Geographic Differences in Prevalence of Double Transverse Foramen
2019
The double transverse foramen (DBLTF) is a cervical spine anatomic variant. Current literature has presented prevalence values of DBLTF in Caucasian Mediterranean subjects that seem to be higher than those observed in other samples of subjects. Therefore we aimed to test if Caucasian Mediterranean subjects present a higher prevalence of the DBLTF than sub-Saharan African subjects. We analyzed the presence of DBLTF in cervical spines of 100 skeletons from Caucasian Mediterranean subjects and 91 skeletons from sub-Saharan African subjects, resulting in a total of 1337 cervical vertebrae having been studied. No DBLTF was found in vertebrae C1, C2, and C3. The pattern of prevalence observed in al…
Trattamento endodontico di un incisivo centrale calcificato
2011
Prevalence and characterization of maxillary sinus septa in a brazilian population
2019
Background The aim of this study was to assess the anatomic aspects of the maxillary sinus septa, by means of computed tomography images, in a Brazilian population. The results might be of clinical significance in sinus lift surgery planning. Material and methods In the study, 123 computed tomographs obtained from a private radiology clinic were used. They were analyzed by a single, trained and calibrated observer in order to evaluate the presence, quantity, localizations, dimensions, orientations and different characteristics in dentate, partially edentulous and completely edentulous individuals of the sinus septa. Results Of the individuals analyzed, 26% had a septum in the maxillary sinu…
